Dr. Ulmer is a graduate of Clemson University (BS, Microbiology) and the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston (MD). His Family Medicine training was obtained from Self Regional Healthcare in Greenwood, SC. He has been a practicing physician since 1991, engaging in full-scope Family Medicine for 18 years (10 years in Obstetrics) before transitioning into blended administrative-clinical roles. In 2000, he completed requirements to become a Fellow of the AAFP.
He realized his love (and need) for the business of medicine and the importance of documentation, coding, and billing early in his career. He became a certified professional coder (CPC) in 2002, making him 1 of only 16 physicians in America at that time with “MD/CPC” credentials. He speaks nationally providing strategic guidance on the business of healthcare with a focus on quality, compliance, and revenue capture as it pertains to outpatient and inpatient medicine.
At Spartanburg Regional, he serves as VP of Clinical Integration and is the CMO of Regional HealthPlus, the Clinically Integrated Network of the six-county area that has 800+ physicians and 400+ non-physician providers. He is heavily involved in physician and NPP education, system strategy on ambulatory CDI and population health/Stars/ACO quality initiatives.
He remains 20% involved with patient care at Family Medicine Five Forks in Simpsonville, SC.
